Plan your visit

How do I book a public tennis court in Hong Kong as a visitor, and what does it cost?

Visitors can play on the courts of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). As a rule every session is rented and there is no free walk-on play; the exceptions, stand-by use and the free courts at Mei King Playground, are described below. Tennis has no ballot. Book on SmartPLAY (smartplay.lcsd.gov.hk), the SmartPLAY app, a self-service station at a leisure venue, or a service counter. You can book up to 7 days ahead, first come first served, and you pay immediately online. If you do not hold a Hong Kong ID card, register as a SmartPLAY Temporary Patron before you book ahead, or book on the spot by showing your valid original travel document. Concessions are the same for local and overseas people. If a session is still unbooked 15 minutes before it starts, it can be taken on the spot, by SmartPLAY users and non-users alike. Outdoor court fees are per court per hour. With floodlights it is HK$57 at any time. Without lights it is HK$42 at the higher-rate times (weekday from 6 p.m., Saturday from 1 p.m., and all day Sunday and public holiday) and HK$34 at other times. Concession rates are HK$28.5 with floodlights and HK$21 or HK$17 without. People aged 60 or above and full-time students get them only before 6 p.m. Monday to Friday (except public holidays) and before 1 p.m. Saturday (except public holidays); persons with disabilities get them at all times. There is no child concession, and you must show proof of eligibility. The HK$21 rate (no lights, higher-rate times) therefore applies to persons with disabilities only. Victoria Park Centre Court costs HK$113 per court per hour with floodlights and HK$84 without, with no concession. Practice courts cost HK$14 with floodlights or HK$10 without, per 30 minutes. Indoor courts cost HK$148 per court per hour at the higher-rate times and HK$120 at other times; indoor concession rates are HK$74 and HK$60, on the same conditions. A few courts have no floodlights, so only the without-lights rates apply there. Show your original ID at check-in; the person who booked must be present. Cancel through SmartPLAY at least one day before. Cancelled or unused sessions are not refunded, and two no-shows in 60 consecutive days suspend your booking rights for 90 days. You can book at most 2 hours a day at peak hours for the same type of facility across all venues, and 2 hours at non-peak hours per venue. Stand-by: when no other session is open for booking, the department may give a paid session that nobody has claimed 10 minutes after the start, free, to people who ask at the service counter, first come first served. Tin Shui Wai Park and Wu Shan Tennis Courts have no booking counter; the official list says these venues only process bookings of immediate sessions for immediate use, paid by Octopus card. The official list shows Mei King Playground's courts as free-charging, so the fee table does not apply there, and we have not confirmed how to book them. All facilities close when tropical cyclone signal No. 8 is issued, and individual hirers get the hire charge refunded. Opening hours differ by venue, so check each venue's page.
